Credit Bureau Dispute
Found an error on your credit report? Here is how to get it fixed.
What Is a Credit Report Dispute?
Your credit report is maintained by credit information companies — CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark — based on data reported by lenders. Sometimes that data is wrong: a closed loan still showing active, a payment marked late that was made on time, or an account that is not yours at all. A dispute is a formal request to the bureau to verify and correct such an entry. Bureaus are required to resolve disputes, typically within 30 days.
How to Raise a Dispute
- Get your latest credit report from the bureau concerned — each bureau offers one free report a year.
- Identify the exact entry that is wrong and collect proof (closure letter, payment receipt, bank statement).
- File the dispute on the bureau's online portal — CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark each have a dedicated consumer dispute page.
- The bureau forwards the dispute to the reporting lender for verification.
- Track the dispute reference number until the bureau confirms correction or explains why the entry stands.
- If unresolved, escalate to the lender's grievance cell and thereafter to the RBI Ombudsman.
